DocsCutting agent costs
How to cut Cursor CLI costs
Where Cursor CLI spend comes from and the free ways to slow it down.
How the bill is built
Cursor's own models come with more included usage. Other models, which most agent work runs on, are charged at API rates up to your plan's monthly amount, then on demand. The CLI bills under your account like everything else.
Long agent sessions are what push a month past the plan. A file read at the start is paid for again on every request until the session ends.
The free fixes
Use Cursor's models for routine work
Refactors with a clear spec, tests and small fixes rarely need a frontier model. This is the biggest lever on the bill.
One task per session
A session that has done four things carries all four into the fifth. Start fresh for unrelated work.
Ask for narrow reads
Name the file and the function. Ask for the failing test, not the whole run, and
git diffon a path. Every line returned rides along on every later request.Keep the rules file short
Rules load into every session. Keep commands and conventions, and move long explanations into files the agent can read when needed.
Check the usage page
When a session felt expensive, find the request that made it so. It is usually a broad read early on.
What habits cannot do
Each fix needs you to remember it on every message. None of them can look at each result as it comes back and keep only what the next step needs.
Where StateSync fits
StateSync runs Cursor CLI on the Cursor account you already have. As each result arrives, it carries forward the part the agent will use, and the whole result is one call away if it needs it. Your plan, your models and your usage pools stay the same. Each request just carries less.
The figures below were measured on Claude Code, not Cursor CLI. StateSync works the same way on Cursor CLI, but we have not published a Cursor CLI run yet.
Short tasks saved the least.
Measured by us on the TokenBench 55-task set, on Claude Code with Claude Sonnet 4.6, with one StateSync run per task against the plain agent's earlier runs. See every task, losses included.
Where to start
- Today: Cursor's models for routine work, one task per session, a shorter rules file.
- This week: narrower reads, and a look at which sessions moved the usage page.
- When agent sessions still push the month past your plan: install StateSync, open your project, start a chat and pick Cursor CLI. The Account page in the app shows what you saved.
