DocsWorking in StateSync
Terminals and VS Code
Terminal settings, and the VS Code extension that puts StateSync's chat and terminal beside your code.
A terminal opened in a project starts in that project's folder. A coding agent started in a StateSync terminal gets StateSync's tools, the same as one started from a chat.
Terminal settings
- Which shell a terminal opens: Settings, then General, then Integrated terminal shell.
- Full-screen agent interfaces: Automatic, Always on or Always off. The change applies to terminals opened after it.
- Font, size, line height and weight: Settings, then Appearance, then Terminal text.
To resize terminal text on the spot, hold Ctrl and scroll, or press Ctrl with plus or minus.
StateSync in VS Code
The StateSync extension puts the app's chat and terminal in a panel inside VS Code. A chat there is an ordinary StateSync chat, and appears in the app too.
- Install the extension from StateSync: Settings, then General, then StateSync terminal in your editor.
- The extension needs VS Code 1.106 or newer, and the StateSync app running and signed in.
Opening a terminal or a chat in VS Code
- The StateSync panel, from the icon on the right edge of the window, has Chat and Terminal tabs and lists recent chats for the folder.
- The StateSync item in the status bar opens a new terminal or chat, and shows how many StateSync terminals the window has.
- In the terminal dropdown next to +, pick StateSync.
- In the Command Palette: StateSync: New Terminal, StateSync: New Terminal in Panel, or StateSync: Open Chat.
The shortcut Ctrl+Alt+` opens a new StateSync terminal. On macOS the shortcut is Cmd+Alt+`.
Which agents get StateSync's tools
In a StateSync terminal, Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI, OpenCode, Factory Droid, Pi and Grok get StateSync's tools.
When the extension cannot help
- StateSync app not running: the terminal opens as a plain shell. Start the app and open a new terminal.
- Plan lapsed or paused: the terminal still opens, without StateSync's tools, and says why.
- Remote windows (SSH, WSL, Dev Containers) are not supported. The app that sets up terminals runs on this computer.
